Selva Prabhu Thirumaran Wins CWG 2026 Triple Jump Bronze

India’s Selva Prabhu Thirumaran capped a memorable night for Indian athletics at the Commonwealth Games 2026 by winning the bronze medal in the men’s triple jump, calling it a proud moment and a fresh push to keep improving. Selva’s podium finish came alongside compatriot Praveen Chithravel, who claimed silver, giving India a standout double podium in the event on Saturday.

Selva said the medal was both a reward for the work put in across the season and a reminder to aim higher. He credited his coaches, family and support staff for backing him through his journey, including the team at the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS).

“I’m really happy to win this bronze medal for India. Every season teaches you something, and this is one of those moments that reminds you why you keep putting in the work. I’m thankful to my coaches, my family and everyone who’s supported me along the way, including the team at the Inspire Institute of Sport. It’s a proud moment, but it’s also motivation to come back stronger and keep pushing for more,” Selva said, as per IIS.

How Selva sealed bronze with a best jump of 16.52m

Selva finished with a best jump of 16.52m to secure the bronze medal after a competition in which he steadily improved through his attempts. He moved into the medal positions with a leap of 16.17m on his second attempt, then raised the mark to 16.43m in the third round.

He followed that progression with his best effort of 16.52m, which ultimately sealed his place on the podium. The sequence of improvements underlined a controlled performance across the rounds, with Selva building momentum as the contest developed.

Speaking to ANI after claiming bronze, Selva described the result as a personal milestone and a moment of pride for his family. “I am feeling very proud of myself and my parents. This was a dream for them from the start. They always wanted me to represent India. I’m really happy… I was focused on the medal. I was more focused on performance. Getting a medal for India is a great thing. I dedicate this medal to whoever supported me, my coaches, physios, teammates, friends, and family. They are always my backbone,” he said.

Praveen Chithravel’s silver came after a dramatic swing in positions. He produced a best jump of 16.58m, but his contest began with him outside the top places early on. After the opening three rounds, Chithravel was in fifth, having opened with 16.05m and then improving to 16.31m in the third attempt.

His turning point came in the fourth attempt, when he delivered a 16.58m leap that briefly moved him into the lead. He eventually settled for silver, but the jump ensured India’s second medal in the event and completed the double podium finish.

What the double podium means for India’s CWG 2026 campaign

The one-two podium presence in the men’s triple jump further highlighted India’s strong athletics campaign at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. India concluded the athletics competition with 10 medals in total, comprising five silver and five bronze, while Para Athletics added another six medals to the country’s overall tally.

Across sports, the athletics medals formed a significant part of India’s broader Games performance, which also featured 10 medals in boxing, eight in weightlifting, four in judo and one bronze in powerlifting through Jhandu Kumar.

With Selva’s bronze and Praveen’s silver included, India’s overall tally at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games rose to 39 medals: 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze. India remained fourth in the medal standings, while Australia led the table with 163 medals, including 68 gold.

For Selva, the bronze medal was framed not as an endpoint but as a marker of progress—one he said will fuel his drive to return stronger and keep pushing for more in the seasons ahead.
