Dodgers Bullpen Meltdown Costs LA in Brewers Loss

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost 5-4 to the National League-leading Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday night after Edwin Díaz surrendered a two-run ninth-inning lead in another damaging bullpen collapse. Milwaukee produced a three-run, five-hit rally to take the game, while the Dodgers missed an opportunity to pull even with the Brewers at the top of the NL standings.

Díaz, the highest-paid closer in baseball, was charged with the loss and blew a save for the third time in his last four appearances. After recording one out in the ninth, he allowed four consecutive singles and three runs before being removed.

The defeat continued a difficult stretch for Los Angeles, which has lost nine of its last 13 games. It also added urgency to the club’s ongoing relief-pitching concerns as the Dodgers try to become the first National League team to win three straight World Series.

Díaz’s ninth-inning struggles decide the game

Los Angeles entered the ninth inning holding a two-run advantage, with Díaz assigned to protect it. Instead, Milwaukee capitalized on the closer’s trouble, scoring three times during a rally built around five hits. Jackson Chourio scored on a Jake Bauers single during the inning.

The latest outing pushed Díaz’s ERA to 11.57. Since returning late last month from a three-month absence for elbow surgery, the three-time All-Star has allowed eight runs and 12 hits in seven appearances.

Díaz said he was frustrated by his inability to produce the results he expects from himself. He also acknowledged that the Dodgers could decide to change his role, while making clear that he intends to help in whichever inning he is assigned.

“It’s frustrating, because I know my ability,” Díaz said. “I know what I can do on the mound. To not be able to do it (stinks). I’ve just got to come tomorrow and try to keep getting better.”

He added that he wants to do what is best for the club, whether that means receiving the ball in the ninth inning or working in another spot.

Roberts faces limited late-inning options

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed clear frustration after the loss, but stressed that changing the closer is not a simple solution. Asked whether Díaz would be allowed to continue working through his struggles in the ninth, Roberts responded: “Give me another option.”

Roberts said the issue extends beyond one reliever. Although the Dodgers’ overall bullpen numbers have not been glaringly poor, Díaz’s recent struggles and other difficult high-leverage performances have left the manager without a reliever he fully trusts at the moment.

“I can’t just say, ‘Change (Diaz) to low leverage,’” Roberts said. “I have to have other options, and to be quite honest, none of those guys really have thrown the baseball great. That’s just kind of the way it is.”

Left-hander Tanner Scott is the most obvious alternative after recording 16 saves this season before Díaz returned. But Roberts also noted the broader need for other pitchers to regain form before a closer-by-committee arrangement becomes a realistic answer.

The bullpen has been under additional pressure because the Dodgers’ lineup has not created many comfortable margins. Los Angeles has won only two games by more than two runs since July 19, repeatedly leaving relievers to protect narrow leads.

A costly loss in a tight National League race

Thursday’s result mattered beyond a single blown save. A win would have brought the Dodgers level with Milwaukee atop the National League standings; instead, the Brewers left Los Angeles with a one-run victory and the Dodgers with another late-game setback.

Roberts said the club must endure the current downturn rather than constantly reshuffle roles. “Everyone has got a role,” he said. “They all have jobs to do, and they all have to do their job. That’s it.”

For Díaz and the Dodgers, the immediate challenge is consistency. The closer remains central to a bullpen problem that has become increasingly difficult to ignore in mid-August.
