Mackenzie Dern Defends Strawweight Title at UFC 330

Mackenzie Dern retained the UFC strawweight championship with a unanimous-decision victory over Gillian Robertson in the UFC 330 co-main event at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. Dern won her first title defense by scores of 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47 after controlling the opening four rounds before Robertson claimed the final frame.

The five-round result was the clearest completed championship outcome from the event coverage, with Dern repeatedly taking Robertson’s back and threatening submissions. The victory keeps Dern as champion at 115 pounds and gives her a successful first defense of the belt.

Dern takes control early and often

Robertson opened the first round by attempting takedowns, but Dern defended the early efforts and later found her own route to the canvas. After connecting with a three-punch combination, calf kicks and a kick to the midsection, Dern landed a takedown and moved to Robertson’s back.

Dern got an arm under Robertson’s neck late in the opening round and came close to a rear-naked choke, but the bell arrived before she could finish. The round set the pattern for the fight, with Dern’s positional control and back takes placing Robertson under sustained pressure.

In the second, Dern brought the contest back to the ground almost immediately. She worked from half guard to side control and then again reached Robertson’s back while searching for a rear-naked choke. Robertson escaped and briefly gained top position, but the round was scored for Dern because Robertson had spent too much of it defending from underneath.

The third round included more exchanges on the feet, with Robertson landing a stiff jab that backed Dern up. Dern responded by changing levels at the 60-second mark, securing another takedown and finishing the frame on Robertson’s back. That gave Dern a 30-27 advantage on the round-by-round scorecard presented in the live coverage.

Robertson nearly stopped an early Dern shot in the fourth round, but Dern worked her back to the canvas and immediately took the back again. Dern used a leg triangle while trying for another rear-naked choke. Robertson defended the submission attempts and eventually moved into top position, but Dern had controlled her for much of the round and was awarded another 10-9 frame.

Robertson produced her best stretch in the fifth. She closed distance, worked Dern to the fence and completed a single-leg takedown. From top position, Robertson landed punches as the fight ended, earning the final round on the live scorecard. It was not enough to overcome Dern’s work across the first four rounds.

Other UFC 330 results from Philadelphia

Jalin Turner scored a 39-second first-round knockout of Kaué Fernandes in a lightweight bout. Turner dropped Fernandes with a left hand after a missed kick attempt, then followed with ground strikes to secure the stoppage.

Esteban Ribovics defeated Edson Barboza by second-round TKO at the 1:32 mark. Ribovics hurt Barboza with punches and elbows in the first round, then landed a straight right hand and punches along the fence in the second. Following the bout, Barboza retired from professional MMA after a 17-year career.

Dustin Stoltzfus submitted Mansur Abdul-Malik in the second round of their middleweight contest. Stoltzfus used takedowns and top pressure before taking Abdul-Malik’s back and securing a rear-naked choke. Chidi Njokuani also earned a unanimous decision over Joel Álvarez, with judges scoring the welterweight fight 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.
