Ravindra Jadeja Reaches 350 Test Wickets in Galle

CategoriesCricket

Ravindra Jadeja completed 350 Test wickets during India’s first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, reaching a landmark that placed him among a select group of all-rounders in the longest format. The India player’s milestone came as Sri Lanka batter Keshara Nuwantha attempted to attack an away-turning delivery and mistimed the shot, with Shubman Gill completing the catch.

The wicket made Jadeja only the fifth Indian bowler to take 350 Test wickets. It also strengthened his place in the record books as one of the game’s leading all-round contributors, with his batting and bowling numbers now combining in rare company.

Jadeja joins India’s leading Test wicket-takers

Jadeja joined Anil Kumble, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kapil Dev and Harbhajan Singh as the only Indian bowlers to have reached 350 Test wickets. Kumble leads the Indian list with 619 wickets, followed by Ashwin with 537, Kapil with 434 and Harbhajan with 417.

Among left-arm spinners, Jadeja moved into third place for Test wickets. Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath, with 433 wickets, and New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori, with 362, are ahead of him in that category.

The 37-year-old had begun the Galle Test with 4,095 runs and 348 wickets from 89 matches. By taking his 349th and 350th wickets in Sri Lanka’s innings, he also crossed the threshold for a major all-round Test combination.

Jadeja had made an earlier contribution with the ball by dismissing Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva for 21. His 350th wicket later in the innings gave India another breakthrough as the hosts continued their reply to India’s first-innings total.

A rare 4,000-run and 350-wicket combination

With more than 4,000 Test runs and 350 wickets, Jadeja joined former India captain Kapil Dev as the only Indian players to achieve the double. Across all Test cricket, Jadeja became only the fourth player to reach the combination, following Kapil, England’s Ian Botham and Vettori.

Kapil ended his Test career with 5,248 runs and 434 wickets. Botham recorded 5,200 runs and 383 wickets, while Vettori finished with 4,531 runs and 362 wickets. Jadeja’s entry alongside those three players highlights the scale of his contribution across both disciplines.

The landmark arrived in a match in which India had posted 462 in their first innings, led by Devdutt Padikkal’s 167. Jadeja scored 13 runs in that innings before making his impact with the ball during Sri Lanka’s response.

At the time of the report, Sri Lanka were 274 for eight and still trailed India by 188 runs. Jadeja’s twin milestones in Galle therefore came during a significant phase of the first Test, with India holding a substantial first-innings advantage and the all-rounder adding another notable chapter to his Test record.
