Lando Norris Extends McLaren Contract Until at Least 2030

Defending Formula 1 champion Lando Norris has signed a contract extension with McLaren that will keep him with the team until at least the end of the 2030 season. The agreement also contains a multi-year option that could extend his stay beyond 2030.

The new deal secures a long-term future for Norris at the team where he began his Formula 1 journey. He joined McLaren as a test and development driver in 2017 before earning promotion to its race line-up in 2019. By the end of the new agreement, he will have spent at least 12 years racing for the team.

Norris said he was excited to continue with the organisation he has described as his home from the start of his Formula 1 career. He pointed to McLaren’s recent progress and said he was confident that the team could achieve more success in the years ahead.

A long-term commitment to McLaren

Norris’ previous contract was believed to run through the end of the 2027 season, making this extension a significant early commitment from both driver and team. The new arrangement gives the British driver certainty over his future while McLaren retains a driver who has become central to its recent results.

Speaking after the announcement, Norris said the security of a longer agreement was calming because he knew he had a job and was with the people he wanted to work alongside. He added that the stability would allow him to focus on his own responsibilities while the team concentrated on its wider objectives.

He also stressed that results remain important in Formula 1, but said there was value in being part of an environment he enjoys. Norris said he wanted to remain at McLaren for as long as possible after what he described as a strong period for the team.

McLaren will also present Norris with the MCL39, the car in which he raced to and won the 2025 title. The gift connects the new deal to the championship season that established him as Formula 1’s defending champion.

Norris has compiled a substantial record with McLaren. He has won 13 Grands Prix, recorded 48 podium finishes and secured 18 pole positions. He has also started 163 Grands Prix for the team, the highest total by a driver in McLaren’s history.

McLaren looks ahead after recent title success

McLaren chief executive Zak Brown said he was incredibly pleased to secure Norris on a long-term contract. Brown described Norris’ development with the team as an example of McLaren’s commitment to identifying, developing and supporting world-class talent, adding that the driver’s achievements spoke for themselves.

Brown credited Norris, team principal Andrea Stella, Oscar Piastri and the wider McLaren group with helping drive what he called a new era of success. He referenced the team’s consecutive constructors’ titles in 2024 and 2025, as well as its first Drivers’ Championship in 17 years.

The extension provides McLaren with continuity as it seeks to continue competing for race wins and championships. For Norris, it confirms that the team where he entered Formula 1 will remain his home for the remainder of the decade at minimum, with the possibility of an even longer partnership still open.
