Rohit Sharma Future Set for BCCI Talks Ahead of 2027 World Cup

Rohit Sharma’s future is set to be among the key topics when the BCCI meets on Thursday, according to a PTI report, with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja also expected to be part of discussions as India begins its road towards the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The report places renewed focus on India’s experienced ODI players at the start of a new World Cup cycle. It said Rohit, unlike Kohli and Jadeja, is under considerable pressure at present, while the futures of all three players are due to be considered at the meeting.

Rohit’s place in the longer-term ODI picture has been the subject of speculation following reports around his possible retirement after the ODI series against England. However, his 138 in the final ODI at Lord’s meant that the possibility was ruled out for now, according to the report.

Report details speculation around Rohit’s ODI future

PTI reported that it had been widely speculated that Rohit was informed by a member of the selection committee, rather than selection chairman Ajit Agarkar, that the panel had decided to move on. The report added that Rohit was angry about the development.

It further said there had been buzz that Rohit agreed to retire following the England ODI series. That prospect did not materialise after his innings of 138 in the final match at Lord’s, which kept the retirement question unresolved for the time being.

Rhodes highlights value of World Cup experience

Former South Africa cricketer Jonty Rhodes, speaking to JioStar, underlined why Rohit’s experience could remain valuable in a World Cup squad. Rhodes said that performances and physical preparation are important, but experience in the pressure of a global tournament is another major factor in selection.

“You have got to remember that having experience at a World Cup is another factor that we don’t factor in,” Rhodes said. “We look at the talent of the players, the ability that they have got and their performances. Maybe they have had a great knock and had a good season. But when it comes down to pressure moments, a World Cup is very much high pressure.”

Rhodes added that mental strength should be considered alongside a player’s ability and recent output. Drawing on his own experience of playing in four Cricket World Cups, he described the tournament environment as stressful and called Rohit “such an asset at a World Cup.”
