BCCI Backs Rohit Sharma as ODI Future Talks Continue

BCCI joint secretary Devajit Saikia has dismissed speculation over Rohit Sharma’s ODI future, backing the veteran opener after a high-level review meeting in Mumbai. The discussion around Sharma’s place in India’s 50-over side has continued as he pursues the 2027 ODI World Cup, but Saikia pointed to the player’s recent form and said there was no need to fuel retirement talk.

Sharma, 39, has already left T20I and Test cricket, making his role in the ODI side a major subject of attention. The former India captain recently made 138 from 110 balls in the third and final ODI of India’s tour of England, although India lost that match. Saikia also referenced Sharma’s recent century at Lord’s while defending his ongoing value to the team.

BCCI dismisses retirement speculation

The review meeting included head coach Gautam Gambhir, BCCI Director of Cricket VVS Laxman, and format leaders Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer. Reports suggested Sharma’s future was among the topics around the meeting, but Saikia rejected the idea that his ODI position had been under debate.

“He is playing superbly in all the matches. So what more do you want? In the last match, he scored 138 runs. So why is there speculation? For now, I don’t want to give any fodder to the speculators,” Saikia said after the briefing.

Saikia’s comments place the focus on Sharma’s current output rather than the outside discussion around his age or a potential succession plan at the top of India’s batting order. His 138 in England arrived amid claims that the fixture could be his final appearance in an India shirt, and the innings gave the BCCI official a recent performance marker when addressing the subject.

The question has gained greater prominence because Sharma’s remaining international career is now centred on the ODI format. His ambition to reach the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, and to chase a trophy that has eluded him, remains an important part of the wider conversation around India’s long-term planning.

Saikia said the meeting had instead focused on the team’s preparation for a busy programme of upcoming international series. He named an immediate series against Afghanistan, followed by West Indies ODIs and T20Is, a significant series against New Zealand, a likely series against Zimbabwe, and then the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.

Performance remains central to India’s planning

For Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, the handling of Sharma’s later-career ODI phase remains a key selection issue. There has been discussion over how quickly India might move towards a new opening combination, with Yashasvi Jaiswal mentioned as an option at the top of the order in the 50-over format.

However, the BCCI’s public stance following the Mumbai meeting was clear: Sharma’s recent performances remain central to the assessment. Saikia’s remarks indicated that the board is not prepared to entertain retirement speculation simply because it has become a recurring topic around the player.

The upcoming calendar will provide further opportunities for India to shape their ODI preparation while managing workloads across formats. For Sharma, the path towards the 2027 World Cup will continue to be measured through performances, with his 138 in England and century at Lord’s cited by the board as evidence of his present form.
