Kimi Antonelli Wins Italian Grand Prix From Back of Grid

Kimi Antonelli won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza after charging from the back of the grid and defeating Mercedes teammate George Russell in a late fight for victory. The 20-year-old Italian began 19th after exceeding the permitted number of power unit changes, but completed a remarkable recovery to claim his seventh win of the season.

The result gave Antonelli a first victory in his home grand prix and extended his championship lead to 66 points. He also became the first domestic winner of the Italian Grand Prix since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966, giving the Monza race another notable entry in its history.

Antonelli recovers from 19th to take control

The race began with immediate drama. Charles Leclerc crashed on the exit of the Parabolica at the end of lap two, losing control of his Ferrari before going through the gravel and into the tyre barriers. Leclerc climbed from the car looking winded but otherwise unhurt.

The incident brought out a red flag. By that point, Russell had taken the lead after passing pole-sitter Pierre Gasly of Alpine. Antonelli had already made substantial early progress from 19th, climbing to 12th before the race restart.

Once running resumed, Antonelli continued moving through the field. His advance brought him into the lead for the first time on lap 18, setting up a close contest with Russell as the two Mercedes drivers battled for control of the race.

A key development came on lap 29, when Antonelli was able to make a tyre change during a virtual safety car period. He emerged on fresh medium tyres, while Russell remained on track on hard tyres. Antonelli built a 15-second advantage, although that margin did not settle the contest.

Russell closed the gap and the fight remained unresolved into the closing stages. Antonelli’s first attempt to overtake on lap 49 did not come off, but he made the move a lap later. After getting past his teammate, he managed the final three laps and crossed the line to secure victory.

Championship lead grows after Monza breakthrough

Antonelli’s Monza success was his seventh victory of the season and increased his advantage at the top of the championship standings to 66 points. The home win also underlined the scale of his recovery after starting at the rear of the grid because of the power unit change penalty.

Russell finished second for Mercedes, while Max Verstappen took third for Red Bull. The McLaren pair of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri followed in fourth and fifth respectively. Lewis Hamilton completed the top six, providing Ferrari supporters with a positive result after Leclerc’s early retirement.

For Antonelli, the Italian Grand Prix combined an early climb through the order, a timely tyre change and a decisive late pass on Russell. The victory delivered a major home milestone and strengthened his position at the head of the Formula 1 championship.
