CategoriesBadminton

Para badminton at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games will bring 151 players from 22 nations together for eight days of competition, with 22 gold medals on offer at the Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium in Aichi from 16 to 23 October. The event is set to renew several major Asian rivalries as Paralympic and world champions compete for continental honours.

China arrive after leading the para badminton medals table at Hangzhou 2022 with 10 gold medals. Indonesia won five golds among 14 total medals, while India collected four golds. Japan, meanwhile, secured two gold medals at the previous Asian Para Games and will compete at home in Aichi-Nagoya with a group of reigning world champions in its lineup.

Hosts and China bring major champions to Aichi

Japan’s challenge includes Sarina Satomi, Daiki Kajiwara and Shino Kawai, all of whom won gold at the Bahrain 2026 BWF Para Badminton World Championships. Satomi and Kajiwara also won gold in the women’s WH1 and men’s WH2 singles respectively at both Hangzhou 2022 and Paris 2024. Kawai is preparing for her Asian Para Games debut after her world title success.

China enter the Games following an 11-gold performance at the Bahrain 2026 World Para Badminton Championships. Their group includes multiple-time Paralympic champions Qu Zimo, Liu Yutong and Cheng Hefang, who compete in the WH1, WH2 and SL4 classes respectively.

Liu Yutong won three gold medals in Bahrain and will seek to continue the form she has shown at major international competitions. Qu Zimo won men’s singles WH1 and doubles WH1-WH2 gold at Tokyo 2020, then defended that double-gold achievement at Paris 2024. He also won two gold medals at Hangzhou 2022 and completed a three-gold sweep at the 2026 World Championships.

Cheng Hefang brings a record that includes women’s singles SL4 gold at Hangzhou 2022, Paris 2024 and the 2024 BWF Para Badminton World Championships. Her meetings with Indonesia’s Leani Ratri Oktila have been a prominent matchup, with the pair expected to contend again in Aichi.

Li Fengmei will defend her women’s singles and doubles SH6 titles after winning three titles at Bahrain 2026. China also feature Yang Qiuxia, the reigning Paralympic and world champion in women’s singles SU5. Qiuxia defeated India’s Thulasimathi Murugesan for gold at Paris 2024 and Bahrain 2026, setting up another significant potential contest between the two players.

India, Malaysia and Indonesia add depth to medal race

India’s squad includes SL3 players Pramod Bhagat and Nitesh Kumar. Bhagat won gold at Hangzhou 2022 before claiming two titles at the Bahrain 2026 World Championships, taking men’s singles SL3 and men’s doubles SL3-SL4 gold with Sukant Kadam. Kumar won Paralympic gold at Paris 2024 after taking men’s doubles SL3-SL4 gold with Tarun Dhillon and men’s singles SL3 silver at Hangzhou 2022.

Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan, a Paris 2024 bronze medallist, is another Indian player identified as a challenger in the women’s SH6 events, where Li Fengmei will be among the leading names.

Malaysia’s Cheah Liek Hou enters after winning men’s singles SU5 gold at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, along with two gold medals at the 2026 World Championships. His ninth world title in Bahrain made him Malaysia’s most successful individual world championship athlete, surpassing the record of eight individual world titles previously held by squash player Datuk Nicol David.

Indonesia’s Rina Marlina and Hong Kong’s Chu Man Kai also arrive with medal-winning experience from Hangzhou 2022, where each won one gold and one silver medal. With established champions and emerging contenders across the classifications, para badminton is positioned as one of the key competitions of the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games.
