Chelsea Beat Leeds 6-3 After Stunning League Cup Comeback

Chelsea came from two goals down to defeat Leeds 6-3 in a remarkable League Cup third-round tie at Stamford Bridge, booking their place in the fourth round after a six-goal response. Cole Palmer scored twice after half-time, while Pedro Neto, Danny Welbeck and Valentin Barco also found the net in a dramatic turnaround.

Leeds led through Tarik Muharemovic in the first half and Brenden Aaronson shortly after the interval, putting Xabi Alonso’s side in serious danger of an early cup exit. But a group of half-time introductions changed the course of the match as Chelsea overwhelmed their visitors with four goals in 12 minutes.

The win put Chelsea back on track after their 2-1 defeat at Premier League champions Arsenal on Sunday had ended Alonso’s three-game winning start. The Blues have now scored 16 goals in Alonso’s first five matches, although the nine goals conceded across the Leeds tie underlined the defensive concerns also noted in the early stages of his reign.

Leeds take control before Chelsea’s response

Alonso made nine changes to his side, including a teenage debut for Reggie Watson, who lined up alongside Argentine youngster Barco in midfield. The altered Chelsea team fell behind in the 23rd minute when Harry Wilson’s corner reached the far post and Muharemovic powered a header beyond goalkeeper Mike Penders for his first Leeds goal.

Leeds extended their advantage three minutes after the restart. Ethan Ampadu supplied a cross, Lukas Nmecha flicked it on, and Aaronson finished to make it 2-0. Chelsea had introduced Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Neto and Reece James at half-time, but Leeds initially appeared untroubled by the changes.

The match turned in the space of a few minutes. Chelsea were awarded a penalty in the 53rd minute after Daniel James’s challenge on Pep Chavarria was judged a foul, and Palmer converted. Two minutes later, Palmer struck again as his shot trickled past Leeds debutant goalkeeper Michael Zetterer to bring Chelsea level.

With the scores at 2-2, Chelsea quickly seized control. Neto curled a 20-yard effort beyond Zetterer in the 60th minute to complete the turnaround. Welbeck then made it 4-2, turning before driving a powerful shot past the Leeds goalkeeper, whose attempted save was described as weak.

Late goals complete a nine-goal League Cup tie

Leeds did not stop competing and reduced the deficit in the 75th minute. Noah Okafor provided the pass for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who finished clinically to make the score 4-3 and briefly restore uncertainty to the contest.

Chelsea, however, restored their two-goal advantage five minutes later. Rogers delivered a cross that Zetterer failed to deal with, allowing Barco to sweep into an empty net. Welbeck then added Chelsea’s sixth in stoppage time, cushioning a header from Barco’s shot to complete the scoring.

The result sends Chelsea through to the League Cup fourth round in style after one of the competition’s most eventful third-round matches. Palmer’s two goals supplied the immediate spark for the recovery, while the contributions of Neto, Welbeck and Barco ensured Leeds’ promising two-goal lead was ultimately overturned.

For Chelsea, the victory offered a forceful attacking response following the Arsenal loss and maintained the momentum of Alonso’s opening weeks. For Leeds, Muharemovic’s opener, Aaronson’s finish and Calvert-Lewin’s late goal were not enough to prevent elimination after Chelsea’s second-half goal spree.
