CategoriesWrestling

India’s Vishvajit More has become the country’s first-ever Greco-Roman finalist at the U23 World Championships, advancing to the men’s 55kg title bout in Las Vegas after a 7-4 semi-final victory over Russia’s Malik Gigiev.

The two-time reigning bronze medalist will now face Georgia’s Koba Karumidze in the final, with the bout set to offer More the chance to win India’s first gold medal in the Greco-Roman competition at the U23 World Championships. His progress marks a significant moment for India’s campaign at the 2026 tournament, which is being held in Las Vegas from October 12 to 18.

More builds on bronze-medal record

More entered the tournament with consecutive U23 World Championship bronze medals from 2024 and 2025. He has now guaranteed himself an improvement on those finishes by reaching the final in the 55kg category.

His route to the championship bout included a close 10-8 win over Mexico’s Isaac Marin Mata. More then delivered a decisive 8-1 quarter-final victory over Iran’s Armin Shamsipour, identified as the U20 world champion, to move into the last four.

In the semi-final, More overcame Gigiev 7-4 to secure his place in the final. The result made him the first Indian wrestler to reach a Greco-Roman final at the U23 World Championships.

More’s previous bronze-medal finish at the 2025 U23 World Championships came in Novi Sad, Serbia, where he defeated Kazakhstan’s Yerassyl Mmayrbekov 5-4 in the bronze-medal bout. Having twice stood on the podium, he has now moved one step closer to the top of it.

The final against Karumidze gives More an opportunity to turn a sequence of medal-winning appearances into a landmark title challenge. The source listed the final for Thursday at 6:30 AM IST.

Mixed start for India’s Greco-Roman contingent

While More carried India into the final, the other Indian Greco-Roman wrestlers mentioned in the event update were unable to progress beyond their opening bouts.

In the men’s 63kg category, Chetan lost to Drury L of the United States. Sagar Singh was defeated by Japan’s T Suzuki in the 67kg division. Sourav Rana in 72kg and Karan Kamboj in 87kg also lost their respective opening encounters.

The U23 World Wrestling Championships began with the Greco-Roman events. Women’s events are scheduled from October 14 to 16, followed by men’s freestyle competition from October 16 to 18.

India has entered 21 wrestlers across the tournament: 10 in men’s freestyle, six in women’s freestyle and five in Greco-Roman. More’s run in Las Vegas has provided the standout result from the Greco-Roman portion, placing him in position to contest a historic gold-medal match.
