Sumit Antil Targets Asian Para Games Gold After 74.82m Record

CategoriesAthletics

India’s Sumit Antil will arrive at the 2026 Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya as a leading gold-medal contender in the men’s javelin F64, carrying a world-record throw of 74.82m from May into the competition. The double Paralympic champion is targeting a second Asian Para Games title after an outstanding run across the sport’s biggest events.

Antil’s latest benchmark came at the eighth Indian Open International Para Athletics Championships in Bengaluru, where he won gold with 74.82m and set a new world record in the men’s F64 category. With the Asian Para Games only days away, that performance has further underlined his status as one of India’s strongest prospects in para athletics.

The event in Aichi-Nagoya represents another major opportunity for Antil to add to a record that already includes Paralympic, world championship and Asian Para Games gold medals. His stated focus extends beyond winning medals, with the javelin thrower looking to improve his own world record and become the first para javelin athlete to cross the 75m mark.

A record of major championship success

Antil first made his mark on the Paralympic stage at Tokyo 2020. Competing in the men’s javelin throw F64 on his debut, he won gold and broke the world record three times during the final. He opened that sequence with 66.95m before setting a new benchmark of 68.55m.

He continued that progress at the 2022 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, taking gold in the men’s F64 javelin with a throw of 73.29m. The distance broke both the world record and the Asian Para Games record. Fellow Indian thrower Pushpendra Singh won silver, giving India a one-two finish in the event.

Antil then defended his Paralympic title at Paris 2024 to become a double Paralympic champion. He added another major gold medal at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi, where he won the men’s F64 javelin title for a third consecutive World Para Athletics Championships gold.

That sequence means Antil has remained unbeaten at the top of the major podium over the last six years, according to the source. His achievements have made him one of India’s most successful para-athletes and established a consistently high standard in the F64 javelin event.

His 2026 campaign has also produced further victories before the Asian Para Games. Antil won gold at the Dubai World Para Athletics Grand Prix and followed it with another win at the New Delhi Grand Prix in March, where he threw 69.25m. The 74.82m effort in Bengaluru in May then raised the world-record mark again.

From wrestling ambitions to javelin excellence

Born in Sonipat, Haryana, on June 7, 1998, Antil initially had ambitions in wrestling and idolised 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Yogeshwar Dutt. An accident while he was returning from tuition on a motorcycle on January 5, 2015, resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee and ended those wrestling plans.

He remained in sport, however, and was introduced to para-sports by para-athlete Rajkumar in 2017. Antil subsequently met coach Naval Singh, who guided him toward javelin throwing. The move began a career that has brought him multiple major titles and repeated world-record performances.

Now bound for Aichi-Nagoya, Antil will seek to build on his Hangzhou triumph and extend his major-championship record. A second Asian Para Games title would be another significant addition, but the 75m barrier remains the larger individual target as he continues to push the F64 javelin standard forward.
