PV Sindhu Rises to World No. 8 in Latest BWF Rankings
PV Sindhu has climbed three places to world No. 8 in the latest BWF World Rankings following her runner-up finish at the French Open in Paris. The Indian shuttler’s move returns her to the world top eight for the first time in three months and strengthens her position in the race for the World Tour Finals.
Sindhu reached her first French Open final after a strong week in which she showed greater precision on her returns and signs of her best form. Her campaign included a three-game semi-final victory over Japan’s Hina Akechi before she faced world No. 1 An Se Young of South Korea in the title match.
French Open run lifts Sindhu back into top eight
In the French Open final, Sindhu made an encouraging start against An Se Young by taking the opening game 21-16. An Se Young recovered to win the next two games 21-11 and 21-12, leaving Sindhu as runner-up in Paris.
Despite the final defeat, the run proved significant for Sindhu’s ranking position. The result delivered a three-place rise and put her at No. 8 in the new BWF list. It is her return to the top eight since her Japan Open triumph in July 2026.
The French Open was also Sindhu’s second Super 750 final of the season, following her Japan Open title. Reaching another final adds to an important stretch of results as she seeks to remain among the leading contenders for qualification for the World Tour Finals.
Her route to the final underlined the value of the Paris result. Sindhu overcame Hina Akechi in a three-game semi-final, then competed strongly in the opening game against the top-ranked An Se Young. While the final turned after that first game, the runner-up finish was enough to produce an immediate gain in the rankings.
The latest update places Sindhu inside the top 10 and specifically at world No. 8, a notable improvement after three months outside the top-eight positions. With the World Tour Finals qualification picture in focus, the ranking points from the French Open give added weight to her recent form.
Other Indian women’s singles movers in BWF rankings
Asmita Chaliha also made a substantial gain after her French Open performance, rising six places to world No. 30. Chaliha reached the quarter-finals in Paris and recorded a win over world No. 3 Akane Yamaguchi during the tournament.
Chaliha’s new position makes her the fourth Indian women’s singles player inside the world top 30. Unnati Hooda is ranked No. 21 after dropping three places in the latest update, while Tanvi Sharma is No. 22 following a one-place drop.
Sindhu’s rise to No. 8 remains the headline development from the rankings release. Her French Open runner-up finish has restored her place among the top eight players in the world and provided a timely boost as the season continues.
