Virat Kohli Draws Huge Crowd at Auckland Airport Before ODIs
Virat Kohli’s arrival at Auckland Airport on Friday drew a large crowd of fans as India’s ODI squad assembled ahead of its upcoming series against New Zealand. The veteran batter was met by supporters seeking selfies, autographs and handshakes after his flight landed in the city.
Five security personnel were allocated to Kohli for fan management, but the number of people gathered at the airport made the situation difficult to manage. Officials were also involved in creating space for the India batter to leave the airport amid the crowd.
The scenes underline the attention around Kohli’s return to New Zealand for the 50-over assignment. India’s ODI campaign against the hosts is scheduled to begin on November 4, with the visitors set to play five matches in the format before a two-match Test assignment.
Large turnout follows Kohli’s Auckland arrival
Videos circulating on social media showed fans waiting at Auckland Airport for extended periods in the hope of seeing Kohli. According to the report, some supporters had been at the airport for several hours, while others were said to have waited for a couple of days.
The crowd created a challenging passage through the airport, with repeated requests directed at Kohli as he made his way out. Some fans reportedly crossed security barriers in an effort to get a photograph or an autograph.
The report also said that some female fans became emotional upon seeing Kohli, and that he responded to their requests. The arrival became a notable early moment in India’s build-up to the ODI leg of the New Zealand tour.
Kohli is part of India’s ODI group for the series, which comes after the ongoing T20I contest between the teams. India hold an unbeatable 3-0 lead in that series, with the third T20I in Wellington featuring an unbeaten 113 from 38 balls by opener Abhishek Sharma while chasing 199.
India’s ODI squad has continued to come together in Auckland. KL Rahul, Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma have also arrived in the city, while pacer Gurnoor Brar has joined the group.
Gill, India’s ODI captain, was spotted training with the Indian T20 team in Auckland on Thursday. He was seen using a fitness-tracking device called temple on his forehead during the session. Gill also spoke with Abhishek Sharma, while he had a conversation with batting coach Sitanshu Kotak before taking his turn in the nets.
India prepare for ODI series starting November 4
The ODI series gives India a five-match 50-over programme against New Zealand before attention turns to the two Tests. Kohli’s arrival places one of the squad’s most closely watched players in Auckland as preparations begin for that next phase of the tour.
Rahul also had a batting session at the nets, alongside Ishan Kishan, who is recovering from a groin injury. The sessions in Auckland have brought ODI players into the wider touring setup while India continue their T20I fixtures against New Zealand.
For Kohli, the airport reception was an immediate indication of the interest surrounding India’s arrival for the ODI series. The focus will now shift from the crowd scenes at Auckland Airport to the opening match on November 4 and the five-game contest that follows against the hosts.
