India Hold China to 2-2 Draw in Women’s Hockey World Cup Opener
India opened their FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup campaign with a hard-earned 2-2 draw against China at Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands. Navneet Kaur and Deepika gave India the lead on two occasions, but China responded through Zhang Ying and Ma Ning to share the points in Pool D.
China arrived as favourites and Olympic silver medallists, making India’s performance significant in a group where only the top two teams progress to the second round. India were ultimately forced to absorb sustained pressure late in the match, but their defensive work in the final quarter ensured they left with a point.
India lead twice before China respond
India made the brighter start and took the lead in the eighth minute. Neha supplied the pass for Navneet, who produced a first-time finish from a tight angle, sending the ball beyond the goalkeeper at the far post.
China created little in the opening quarter but levelled the match in the 15th minute. Shilpi Dabas fouled Zhong Jiaqi, leading to a penalty stroke. Zhang Ying converted from the spot to make the score 1-1.
India continued their positive showing in the second quarter and restored their advantage in the 25th minute. Deepika scored from a penalty corner, with the ball taking a deflection after hitting a Chinese player before beating the goalkeeper. The goal put India 2-1 ahead at half-time.
China came out with greater urgency after the interval. Their pressure produced several opportunities, while India defended their circle effectively in the early stages of the third quarter. Savita made a save from Zhang Ying’s dragflick in the 41st minute after China won another penalty corner.
China’s equaliser arrived in the 39th minute. After Savita made a close-range save, China won a penalty corner and Ma Ning converted with a dragflick to bring the score back to 2-2.
The final quarter was largely played under Chinese pressure. China won a penalty corner in the 57th minute, but India’s defence dealt with the danger. India also had late counterattacking moments, including chances involving Navneet and Lalremsiami, though neither produced a winning goal.
Pool D point keeps India in contention
The draw gives both India and China one point from their opening Pool D fixture. England sit on top of the group after beating South Africa 4-0 earlier on Sunday.
India’s next match is against South Africa on Tuesday, while China will play England. With only two sides advancing from the group, the opening draw leaves the next set of fixtures important for both India and China.
For India, the result was built on a fast start, two goals from attacking situations and a resolute finish against a China side that pushed for a late winner. Navneet’s early field goal and Deepika’s penalty-corner strike put India in front twice, while Zhang’s penalty stroke and Ma’s dragflick ensured China recovered on both occasions.
Neither team could find a decisive third goal, and the match finished level at 2-2 after India cleared China’s final attacks. The point gives India a composed start to their World Cup campaign ahead of Tuesday’s meeting with South Africa.
