India’s Unbeaten World Cup Run Ends in 2-0 Netherlands Loss
India’s unbeaten run at the Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026 ended with a 2-0 defeat to world No. 1 Netherlands at Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen on August 21. Yibbi Jansen struck inside two minutes before Matla doubled the Dutch advantage from a penalty corner in the third quarter, leaving India unable to find a way back.
The result was India’s first loss of the tournament after they had reached the second round with five points from three matches. Sjoerd Marijne’s team had drawn 2-2 with China, beaten South Africa 6-1 and held England to a goalless draw, but faced a major test against a Netherlands side that had been flawless in its earlier matches.
India’s defensive work and a series of saves kept the margin at two, but the Dutch controlled long stretches of the contest. India now have Australia and China still to come, making the response to this defeat significant in their World Cup campaign.
Early Jansen strike puts Netherlands in control
The Netherlands made an immediate impact after earning a penalty corner in the opening quarter. Jansen, who entered the match with six goals in the tournament, converted in the second minute with a powerful drag flick into the bottom-right corner. It was her seventh goal of the World Cup and gave the hosts an early 1-0 lead.
India were under pressure again in the sixth minute when the Dutch won another penalty corner after an on-field decision was upheld following a referral. This time, goalkeeper Bichu denied Jansen’s drag flick and the Indian defence cleared. Netherlands continued to press, with the live commentary noting half a dozen circle penetrations in the opening minutes.
India produced an encouraging passage in the ninth minute, using passing and movement to break the Dutch press and enter the circle. The move ended with a foul, however, and the Netherlands cleared. At the other end, Felice Albers’ work inside the circle helped earn another penalty corner in the 13th minute, but Jansen’s attempt hit the post.
India had a chance to level in the second quarter after winning a penalty corner in the 18th minute. Depika’s effort was blocked by a Dutch rusher, preserving the one-goal lead. Savita replaced Bichu in goal for the second quarter and was soon called into action.
In the 24th minute, Savita saved a reverse-stick effort from Albers after the Dutch forward ran into the circle. She then made another important intervention amid pressure in the circle, going to ground to block before India’s defenders cleared the ball away.
Matla’s penalty-corner goal settles the match
India began the second half seeking an equaliser, but the Netherlands extended their lead in the 38th minute. Matla converted from another Dutch penalty corner, with her drag flick taking a deflection off an Indian defender’s foot and wrong-footing Savita on its way into the net.
India had an opportunity to counter after blocking an early Dutch penalty-corner effort in the third quarter, but the final pass broke down and the ensuing shot lacked conviction. The visitors had created three big chances by the 43rd minute but did not convert any of them, while they had earned two penalty corners in the match.
The Netherlands were reduced to 10 players following a card late in the third quarter, offering India a possible route back into the game. The Dutch still carried a 2-0 advantage into the final 15 minutes and largely kept control of the contest.
Savita continued to limit the damage in the final quarter. She denied Albers from a tight angle in the 48th minute and made another crucial save in the 57th after India lost possession deep in their own half and the Netherlands attacked down the right. The Dutch also failed to convert a couple of late penalty corners, but their two earlier goals proved enough to end India’s unbeaten start.
