India Women Fall 2-0 to Netherlands at Hockey World Cup 2026
India’s women suffered a 2-0 defeat to defending champions Netherlands in their opening second-stage Pool E match at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, with Yibbi Jansen and Frederique Matla scoring at Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen on Friday.
The result leaves India on one point in Pool E, carried forward from their first-stage draw with China. Netherlands moved to six points after adding three points from this victory to the three they had brought into the second stage, while China have two points following their draw with Australia. Australia are level with India on one point.
Netherlands’ win confirmed their place in the semi-finals. India now need to beat Australia in their final Pool E fixture and also require Netherlands to defeat China in the other match to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
Early Dutch goal puts India under pressure
Netherlands made an immediate start and needed only 81 seconds to take the lead. A full press brought an early penalty corner, and Jansen converted in the second minute, firing past goalkeeper Bichu Devi to her left.
The defending champions continued to create chances in the opening quarter. Bichu made an excellent left-foot save from a penalty corner in the fifth minute and then denied Freeke Moes shortly afterwards. India gradually settled, making their first circle entry in the ninth minute.
Salima Tete registered India’s first shot three minutes later, but her effort went over the post. Netherlands were close to adding a second in the 13th minute when a penalty-corner shot hit the post, leaving India one goal behind at the end of the first quarter.
Savita replaced Bichu in goal at the beginning of the second quarter and was soon involved. India won their first penalty corner in the 19th minute, but Deepika’s flick was blocked after striking the rusher’s foot, and the retake was stopped by a Dutch stick.
India came close again through Navneet Kaur in the 22nd minute. She received a pass inside the circle, but her effort flew just over the crossbar. At the other end, Savita denied Felice Albers and made further interventions during a goalmouth scramble to preserve the 1-0 scoreline at half-time.
The Dutch increased their pressure after the interval. Salima produced a key block while rushing out to stop a penalty corner in the 33rd minute, while India created a counter-attacking opportunity but Sunelita’s push from inside the circle did not have enough power to trouble the goalkeeper.
Matla doubles the lead as India face decisive Australia match
Netherlands scored their second goal in the 38th minute after winning another penalty corner. Matla’s effort found its way past the Indian defence and the player positioned on the post, extending the lead to 2-0.
India needed an early response in the final quarter, but Netherlands continued to control the match. Moes struck the post in the 54th minute, while Savita made another save two minutes later to prevent a further Dutch goal.
India continued to push forward late in the contest and Navneet had their closest chance in the 59th minute. Netherlands goalkeeper Anne Veenendaal made the save, taking a blow to her helmet in the process. In the dying seconds, India also defended a final Dutch penalty corner, with Ishika making the save on the post.
Netherlands saw out the closing moments to secure the 2-0 result. For India, the focus now shifts to Australia, with a victory required in their final Pool E match alongside a Netherlands win over China.
