Sree Charani sets record 817 rating in Women’s T20I rankings

India left-arm spinner Sree Charani has set a new all-time high in the ICC Women’s T20I Bowling Rankings, reaching 817 rating points after her recent performances in Japan. Already ranked No. 1 among T20I bowlers, Charani moved beyond the previous record of 806 points set by Australia’s Megan Schutt in November 2018.

The 817-point mark is the latest recognition for Charani’s role in a highly successful period for India. She was a key bowler during India’s run to an eighth Women’s Asia Cup title and their subsequent gold-medal campaign at the Asian Games.

Charani’s record matters not only because it extends her lead at the top of the T20I bowling list, but because it places her above a benchmark that had stood since 2018. Her performances across India’s recent title-winning campaigns supplied the results behind the rise.

Charani’s Asia Cup and Asian Games impact

At the Women’s Asia Cup, Charani took 12 wickets, including figures of 4/20 in the final against Sri Lanka. That contribution came as India secured the title for the eighth time.

She followed that tournament with more decisive work at the Asian Games in Japan. Against hosts Japan, Charani returned career-best figures of 4/10 to help send India into the semi-finals. She then took two wickets in the match on 22 September that lifted her rating to its peak of 817.

The sequence underlined the consistency behind the record. Charani combined wicket-taking hauls with another two-wicket performance in a crucial Asian Games match after delivering four wickets against Japan. Her Asia Cup final display against Sri Lanka and her 12 wickets across that competition added further weight to her rankings surge.

India’s recent success also produced movement in the batting standings. Smriti Mandhana returned to the top five of the ICC Women’s T20I Batting Rankings after scoring 79 in India’s Asian Games final win over Sri Lanka.

Elsewhere in the T20I bowling rankings, a player who took three wickets in the Asian Games final against Sri Lanka rose to 754 points, while England’s Sophie Ecclestone sits third on 723. The updated figures underline the high level Charani has reached at the top of the list.

Other ranking changes across women’s cricket

The ODI series between Zimbabwe and West Indies in Harare also produced significant rankings movement, with the series tied at 1-1. A West Indies batter climbed three places to fourth in the ODI Batting Rankings on 711 points, close to a career-best rating of 714, after an innings of 182 in the first ODI.

West Indies teammate Realeanna Grimmond jumped 34 places to joint 102nd on 270 points. For Zimbabwe, Nyasha Gwanzura rose 52 places to 156 after an unbeaten 18 and career-best figures of 4/33 helped deliver a win over West Indies in the second match.

Modester Mupachikwa moved up 16 places to a career-best 40th in the ICC Women’s ODI Batting Rankings on 492 points after scores of 86 and 38. Francisca Chipare climbed 26 places to joint 123rd following returns of 2/57 and 2/16.

West Indies bowlers Ashmini Munisar and Aaliyah Alleyne also advanced. Munisar rose 23 places to joint 84th after taking four wickets at an average of 10.5 across two matches, while Alleyne moved up eight places to 58th after figures of 3/44 and 2/27.

Ash Gardner remains No. 1 in the ODI all-rounder rankings on 497 points, while Hayley Matthews leads the T20I equivalent on 502. Alana King tops the ODI bowling rankings with 753 points, and Charani’s 817 now stands as the defining number in the Women’s T20I bowling list.
