Rashid Khan First to 200 Men’s T20I Wickets for Afghanistan
Rashid Khan became the first bowler to take 200 wickets in men’s T20 Internationals when he dismissed Zimbabwe wicketkeeper-batter Tadiwanashe Marumani during Afghanistan’s second T20I against Zimbabwe at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Marumani was out for two as Zimbabwe chased 222, and the wicket took Afghanistan’s leg-spinner to the historic landmark.
The milestone places Rashid alone as the first player to reach 200 wickets in the men’s international 20-over format. It came in a match in which Afghanistan had earlier recovered from a difficult batting start to post 221/7 from their 20 overs.
Rashid reaches a landmark in the chase
Rashid’s dismissal of Marumani was the defining individual moment of the second T20I. With Zimbabwe pursuing a daunting target, the Afghanistan captain removed the wicketkeeper-batter for two runs to bring up wicket No. 200 in men’s T20Is.
The achievement underlined Rashid’s continued importance to Afghanistan’s T20I side. His record came in the shortest international format, where Afghanistan’s bowling unit was defending a total built on a remarkable middle-order recovery and a late burst from the captain himself.
Rashid also contributed with the bat at the end of Afghanistan’s innings, making an unbeaten 25 from six balls. His cameo included four sixes, while Mujeeb Ur Rahman finished unbeaten on two as Afghanistan closed on 221/7 at a run rate of 11.05.
Omarzai century drives Afghanistan’s recovery
Azmatullah Omarzai led Afghanistan’s turnaround with 116 from 50 balls after the side had slipped to 38/5. His innings featured five fours and 12 sixes, producing a strike rate of 232.00 and transforming the complexion of the total.
Afghanistan’s early losses had left them under pressure. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Mohammad Akram and Shahidullah Kamal were unable to make an impact, while Sediqullah Atal made 17 from 21 balls before being dismissed in the ninth over.
Omarzai found key support from Ijaz Ahmad Ahmadzai, who struck 52 from 27 deliveries with five fours and three sixes. Together, Omarzai and Ijaz added 142 runs from 59 balls for the sixth wicket, taking Afghanistan from their early collapse to a commanding position.
Ijaz was dismissed at 180 to end the partnership, but Omarzai continued to attack before falling for 116 in the 19th over. Rashid’s six-ball finish then added further momentum to Afghanistan’s final total.
Zimbabwe bowlers share the wickets
For Zimbabwe, Brad Evans and Kundai Matigimu took two wickets each. Vincent Masekesa, Ernest Masuku and Sikandar Raza claimed one wicket apiece in an innings dominated by Omarzai’s century and the sixth-wicket stand with Ijaz.
But the match also delivered a major international milestone for Rashid. By removing Marumani during Zimbabwe’s chase, the Afghanistan spinner became the first bowler to reach 200 men’s T20I wickets, adding a landmark achievement to a game shaped by Afghanistan’s recovery to 221/7.
