Kimi Antonelli Illness Clouds Mexico City GP Title Bid
Kimi Antonelli was excused from Thursday media duties ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix after falling ill, with Mercedes saying the Formula One title leader was resting as a precaution. The 20-year-old Italian is expected to return on Friday for a weekend that could deliver the championship.
Antonelli was absent from scheduled news conferences and reporter commitments at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez because of a viral illness. Mercedes said he was feeling under the weather and that the FIA had excused him from media day to allow him the opportunity to recover.
“We expect him to be back tomorrow,” the team said. The timing is significant because Antonelli enters the Mexico City weekend on the verge of becoming Formula One’s youngest champion and the first Italian title winner in 73 years.
Antonelli has a decisive title advantage in Mexico
Antonelli holds a 123-point lead over Mercedes team-mate George Russell in the drivers’ championship, while Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton is 124 points behind. That margin gives the Mercedes driver several routes to securing the title at the high-altitude Mexican round.
He can clinch the championship by finishing ninth or higher, even if Russell wins the race. Antonelli will also become champion if either Russell or Hamilton does not win, regardless of whether Antonelli scores points or even takes part in the grand prix.
The illness therefore arrives at a pivotal point in the season, but Mercedes’ initial expectation was that Antonelli would be available again after the rest day. The Mexico City Grand Prix is the second event in a run of three consecutive races across Texas, Mexico and Brazil, making recovery and preparation especially important.
Antonelli was not the only driver unavailable on Thursday. Cadillac’s Valtteri Bottas was also declared absent through illness, with the American team saying it had chosen to give him a day of rest to support his recovery.
If Antonelli were unable to race, Mercedes reserve driver Frederik Vesti would be the likely replacement. Vesti would make his Formula One race debut should he be called up, having already completed six free practice sessions for Mercedes.
Mercedes maintain measured approach to championship weekend
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff urged calm as the team pursues what he described as the first part of a potential Formula One double-title success. Wolff said the approach would remain unchanged despite the championships moving closer.
“The championships are moving closer, but our mindset does not change,” Wolff said. He stressed the importance of concentration, discipline and focusing on each session rather than the possible outcome of the weekend.
Mercedes will also use Vesti in Friday’s opening practice, when he is set to take over Russell’s car. Wolff said the reserve driver is an important member of the team and can provide precise, useful feedback as Mercedes works through its Friday programme.
The immediate focus remains Antonelli’s recovery and his expected return to the cockpit. With his championship advantage giving him a wide margin in Mexico City, the weekend presents a major opportunity for Mercedes and its young driver to complete the drivers’ title race.
For now, Antonelli’s media silence is a precautionary interruption rather than a confirmed change to his race plans. Mercedes’ stated expectation is that he will be back on Friday, with the title-deciding scenarios still firmly in his favour.
