Jan-Lennard Struff Stuns Novak Djokovic in Basel Thriller
Jan-Lennard Struff produced his first career win over Novak Djokovic on Thursday, rallying from a set down to claim a 6-7 (4/7), 7-5, 7-6 (7/5) victory in the second round of the ATP 500 tournament in Basel. The German’s comeback ended Djokovic’s run in Switzerland and cost the Serb valuable ground in the race for a place at the ATP Finals in November.
Djokovic, a seven-time ATP Finals champion, took a tightly contested opening set in a tie-break after neither player dropped serve. But Struff stayed in the contest across a tense 2hr 35min encounter, using aggressive serving to challenge the 24-time Grand Slam winner before completing the upset in the deciding tie-break.
Struff turns the match after opening-set tie-break
The first set offered little separation on serve. Djokovic and Struff each held throughout the set, sending it into a tie-break that Djokovic won 7-4. That gave the Serb an early advantage, but it did not settle the contest against an opponent who continued to apply pressure with his serve.
The key moment of the second set arrived late. With Djokovic serving at 6-5, Struff broke to take the set 7-5 and level the match. It was a costly lapse for Djokovic after the opening set had been decided without either player surrendering serve.
Struff then carried the match into a deciding set, where the margin remained equally fine. The German ultimately won the third-set tie-break 7-5 to close out a three-set victory. The result was particularly significant in the pair’s head-to-head record: Struff had lost each of his previous eight meetings with Djokovic before Thursday’s breakthrough.
For Djokovic, the defeat came at an important stage of the season. The ATP Finals in Turin are scheduled for November and are reserved for the top eight players in the race rankings, with the standings determined by results achieved during the current season. Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the field because of a knee injury.
Djokovic currently sits 11th in the race and had arrived in Basel seeking points to strengthen his qualification position. His second-round exit means he misses the opportunity to add further points at the ATP 500 event, while the chase for the Turin places remains closely contested.
Basel results affect the Turin qualification race
Djokovic could take some consolation from another second-round result in Basel. Rafael Jodar, who is ranked ninth in the race, was eliminated by Monaco’s Valentin Vacherot. That result prevented Jodar from making progress in the tournament and maintained the pressure around the qualification positions.
Elsewhere, Arthur Fils, seventh in the race, recovered from a set down to defeat American Alex Michelsen 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/5). Fils’ win underlined the value of every result as players pursue the limited number of ATP Finals places.
Struff’s victory, meanwhile, stands as one of the most notable results of the Basel tournament. After dropping the first set, he recovered when Djokovic faltered serving for the second set and held his nerve in the final tie-break. Djokovic’s campaign is over, while Struff moves forward with a first win against one of the sport’s most decorated players.
